I have grown up in a tramping family, and have climbed the five highest peaks in the North Island (most of them several times).
Most of my tramping is done in Auckland's Waitakere ranges due to proximity, but my favourite trips have been in the South Island.
I am also a keen trail runner and multisporter. 2011 New Zealand U20 Trail Running Champ and one of the youngest people to run the Hillary Trail in a day.
Omanawanui Track
½ day. Easy. One way.
Omanawanui is the best track in the whole of the Waitakere Ranges with fantastic views of the Manukau Harbour and Auckland City, Awhitu Peninsula, and Whatipu Beach. Almost never gets muddy underfoot.

Cape Brett Hut

The old lighthouse keeper's cottage has been converted into a fairly spacious DOC hut.

Mt. Hikurangi Hut
Standard Hut (Private). Capacity: 8.
A very rustic hut situated on the slopes of Mt. Hikurangi which sleeps 6-10 people. Pretty chilly in cold weather even with the stove going full blast.
