car hire?

    4 weeks in Feb 2009, about 2 weeks in each island. Guess we want the cheapest transport available (4 wheels), but not camper van.
    Been told we need to book a hire car now, as nothing (cheap)will be available by February, is this so ? Don't want to commit yet as we don't have any itinerary, and I like to be fairly fluid in plans.

    Any advice on anything welcome. Matt from Wales.

    Hi Matt
    I can recommend two car hires for the South Island, but reasonably cheap and good service. No extras and both small companies so no big overheads. Try 'Shoestring Rentals' or Airport Rental, both in Christchurch. I have used them both a few times and no problems. Not sure about the North Island. Don't be put off by the name 'Shoestring' they're really pretty good. Cameron who runs it couldn't have done more for us last time we were there in March.

    Hi Matt i have used Jucy Rentals three times with no problems yet,as im going to use them in April 2009 again Head Office is in Christchurch for South Island and Auckland for the North Island
