South Kaipara Head camping ban
Post by Peter Vahry on Tue Aug 07, 2012 3:48 pm
DoC intend to gazette the whole Papakanui area at Kaipara South Head (otherwise known as 'the bombing range') at the top of Muriwai Beach as no camping under the Freedom Camping Act. They also plan to use the Act to ban camping around Lake Ototoa in the same region.
The Tapora area on the other side of the Kaipara Harbour is also to have a ban on camping.
This is proposed in documents being considered by the next Auckland Conservation Board meeting. -
Some more info courtesy of Auckland 4wd club.
I dont know if anyone here visits these areas but the processes used could be used elsewhere which could affect trampers

Camping bans around Kaipara Harbour
Camping to be outlawed around bombing range
DoC intend to gazette the whole Papakanui area at Kaipara South Head (otherwise known as 'the bombing range') at the top of Muriwai Beach as no camping under the Freedom Camping Act-Phase 2. They also plan to use the Act to ban camping around Lake Ototoa in the same region. Tha same will apply to the Tapora area on the other side of the Kaipara Harbour.
This is proposed in documents being considered by the next Auckland Conservation Board meeting on 15 August.
Attached is the description of the locations and the DoC reasoning, along with an explaination of the application of the Freedom Camping Act (and the 'Phase 2')

Interesting. Since most of the coastal queens chain is gazetted in the form of a legal road, presumably the freedom camping bill can apply
