I believe it's importatnt to have a leader(for the want of a better term). If anything they're an experienced person to help make a decision in a crisis or to give some guidance to others.

this has a classic case of topic drift. Im going to start a thread on What makes a trip leader and see where it goes

Alrighty. Good idea. I'll see if I can get onto that new thread.

@Honora, I noticed your comment on the Wilderness article at http://www.wildern...per-not-experienced about the menu he'd taken.
Did you mean to suggest that he might have had something else in mind than a 4 hour walk? Someone responded and that seems to be the meaning they took from your comment. -
@Izogi: I wouldn't have a clue - I just can't fathom the bizarre menu for a 4 hour walk. Maybe he thought he needed to take all that stuff - 3L of fruit juice etc. However, he'd done walks before. I couldn't imagine anyone scarfing down all that food in a 4 hour time frame and I've been observing hundreds of people's lunches and snacks over the years. (My partner keeps a database and he has been on tramps with 650 people and that doesn't include the people on courses, only tramps/climbs).
I walked up to Mt Brown Hut from 5.30pm to 8.10pm on Sunday night and all I needed to eat was a snack bar. Of course when we got to the hut, we had an evening meal...Same again on the way down, one snack bar and then lunch at the road end. -
no accounting for some peoples taste...... I"ve seen someone pull out an entire smoked chicken for lunch....
dont forget he wasnt european, different culture. some cultures like to keep themselves surrounded with lots of food.... lucky for him he did that.. -
We have a regular in our club who has 2 minute noodles and fish floss for breakfast. It does the job and ticks all the boxes for a tramping breakfast but I couldnt stomach that. Not first thing in the morning.
Fish floss is strange stuff If anyone knows where to buy it in NZ he would be very interested. He brings his in from Singapore. Closest Ive found is pork floss. Both taste far nicer than they look -
The 2 examples cited above sound pretty good to me (chook, fish floss). Actually the fish floss sounds like a great, light proteinaceous idea. One unusual thing I saw was an Italian adding parmesan to his porridge. I tried that for a while but didn't stick with it. As I go out so much, I'm keen to give different foods a go for some variety.
