40 proof whiskey is only 20% alcohol... I'd burn it too.
However if we start talking about single malt at about 100 proof then the only burning that should be going on is the back of the throat... -
single malt 100 proof shouldnt burn. It should sliver down smoothly. Its nothing like red square vodka. (the only stuff that will burn is the back of the throat)

proof spirit is an archaic measure 100 proof = the point where gunpowder soaked in the stuff can be lit with a match.
Ive had 133 proof Australian rum (4 of us shared half a bottle then on the trip home one person dropped his still near new Kawasaki 1000)
