New Zealand Tramper

This is the first hut up the Karamea River from the coast end. It takes about half a day to walk in from the road end if river levels are normal but becomes a mission if the river is high. On our last visit we struck abnormally low river levels and breezed in in about 3hrs. Despite the huts proximity to the roadend many visitors tend to fly in. The river is popular for fishing, hunting, kayaking & rafting.

Access

Up the TR of the river from the roadend carpark. There is a marked track from there.(The track start was changed a few years back to avoid crossing private property) The route is a mixture of unbenched & benched track, river bed & boulder travel. Wading rather than taking an alternative higher level route can save you time in a couple of places. Two people should be quicker than one as assistance getting up/down a couple of bouldery bits can obviate the need to take longer routes.
