Tramper

Averills Hut (removed)

Averils Hut was a 4-bunk hut in the Haurangi Forest Park. It looks a tempting spot to overnight when climbing the track to the 981m Mt Ross summit, the highest point in the park, which starts at the hut. However, the place is in sorry state. The roof looks OK - but just hope any rain's coming straight down, as there's only about two and a half walls (adding up the various pieces). The water tank is still there, but the tap's long gone, and a branch plugs the hole where it used to be. There's two bunks looking solid enough, and one rolled-up 1" foam mattress. Do yourself a favour - camp, or stay at the nearby Sutherlands Hut.

The 4wd track once leading to the hut is washed out and overgrown from the junction with the Sutherland Road, but easily trampable. The hut is 20m off the track - look for a Tui can wrapped around a tree trunk indicating where to turn off.

From the hut to Mt Ross is a good tramping track. The old 4wd track ends 200m beyond the hut.

Access Haurangi Road: 5km, 4wd track via Sutherland Road.

Te Kupi (Pinnacles carpark). 20km, 4wd track. Here -> Sutherlands Hut, 2km (20-30 mins) -> Pinnacles carpark, 18km, 3.5-6 hrs). Mountianbikes permitted. Motormikes, ATV's with permission

A loop track climbs to Mt Ross summit and back to the Sutherland Road. The ridgeline south of Mt Ross is hard going: scrubby with lots of windfall. Ridgeline access to Washpool / Pararaki is possible to the determined.
