New Zealand Tramper

Route from Turnbull Biv to Mt White Road via True Left of Poulter River

When the Poulter River is up a bit so that river crossing is inadvisable, it is possible to travel all the way down the true left of the Poulter to where it is bridged by the Mt White Road near the confluence with Boundary Stream in current conditions at the time of writing (June 2010).

It will take about 4 hours to travel this route in slightly high river flows. At times it will be possible to wade some sections in the river to avoid taking to the scrub at the bank’s edge. In places where the river cuts in and is impossible to wade, cattle tracks are generally found within the bush.

The route is reasonable. Where massive shingle cliffs line the bank, it is easy to walk around the edge at the bottom though this may not be a good idea in heavy rain due to instablility.

We actually got to the bridge half an hour before a party on the true right, walking along the 4WD track just downstream of Pete Stream. Mind you, they had some height gain and we had the motivation of trying to get ahead of them so we could scrounge a ride off them to our car at Andrews Stream.

In case you don’t get a lift, you face a 17km road walk to Andrews Stream if that’s where your car is parked.
