Explorer Hut

Small hut located near Douglas Saddle. Easiest access is from the Mikonui valley. None of the routes are recommended in wet weather or soon after heavy rain as there are lots of unbridged river/stream crossings.

Access

From the Mikonui road end or the Hokitika Gorge carpark. There are two routes from the Hoki Gorge; up Doctors Creek or via Minnow Creek & Murray Saddle to Doctors Creek. The latter is the easier of the two. They are both more challenging than coming in from the Mikonui. If the Hoki river is very low you can ford from the farm track on the TR opposite Minnow Creek. If going this way park at the car park at the end of Whitcombe Valley road. (it saves c. 20 mins on using the swingbridge route)
