DOC's website states that they upgraded the small, cold Arete Biv to a 2-bunk 'Arete Hut' in 2007. As such, the following information may be out of date.
The bright orange Arete Biv sits on a small tussock ledge about 60m to the south-east of the Tararua Main Ridge as it heads north-east from Arete Peak. The biv is not visible from Arete Peak and finding it in bad visibilty can be a mission. From the peak follow the main ridge steeply downhill for about 400m towards Mt Dundas until the ridgeline levels out. The Biv and it's plateau are now 60m to your right.
Arete lies on both the Northern Crossing and the Tararua Main ridge. Both are excellent multi-day tramps, and do not attract the high traffic of the Southern Crossing, so peace and tranquility are a possibility, if not ensured.
This is an alpine biv with no heating, so bring warm gear!
