Kohukohunui - ex Moumoukai Hill Road
Hunua Ranges Auckland heading for the tallest peak in the Hunua Ranges - Kohukohunui
This was a surprisingly simple and deserted walk to Aucklands highest peak, though I could see it may get messy and slow in winter in places. Half of the trip is on 4 wheel drive closed road, the other half pretty good track. It is reasonably uneventful, not too steep and not too taxing on fitness.
The views are not that great to be honest. Even the top is covered in bush and climbing up the trig only give you the odd glimpse.
Not a sexy walk, but good place to start some training close to home. I think you have to be a tramper and not just someone hiking for some great views to bother with this one. Mt Te Aroha is way more challenging and the views 100x better.
We also seemed to cover the distance in way less time than was perscribed by maps and signs making the ascent in 2 hours 45 minutes and the descent in 2 hours with a break at the top for lunch on top of this.
