New Zealand Tramper

Monument Hut (6 bunks, matresses, stove, firewood, river water) is a forestry style hut in the Hopkins. Its located just inside beech forest on the west valleyside, looking out over river flats.

The hut is 8km from the roadend along a good 4WD track - easy to follow in the dark. As such this hut gives the option of walking in late evening for an early morning start.

Both the Hopkins and Huxley valleys provide good easy tramps along marked tracks on the valley-floors.

Unmarked alpine routes exist over several cols in the area making many alpine loop tramps possible.

Red deer, chamois and thar are present in moderate-high numbers.
